Youth Services & Library Assistant

 

Whelden Memorial Library seeks qualified applicants for the part-time position of Youth Services & Library Assistant. This role plays a key part in developing and maintaining the youth collection and delivering services and programs for children and teens (birth–17), while also supporting general library operations.

This is a 15–20-hour-per-week position. Evening availability is required; weekend availability is a plus. The schedule and weekly hours may vary based on programming needs.

Primary responsibilities include selecting and maintaining materials for the children’s and young adult collections, creating thoughtful and inclusive displays, evaluating usage to ensure the collection remains current and responsive to community needs, and planning and delivering programs for education and entertainment such as storytimes, crafts, workshops, and reading clubs. Additional responsibilities include assisting at the circulation desk, cataloging, creating displays, and supporting general library operations. The position also involves building connections with families, schools, and local organizations; promoting programs and services; and contributing to a welcoming and inclusive library environment.

The ideal candidate will bring creativity, initiative, and a genuine interest in youth services. This role requires a high level of independence, along with strong collaboration skills. The candidate should be comfortable managing their own time, working with the public (including public speaking), and adapting to new tools and technologies. The desire or ability to craft or lead creative group projects will serve a candidate well.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience working with children or teens strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with library systems, Google Suite, Canva, and social media is desirable
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative

Salary Range

$22.00 - $24.00  /  hour
